According to a local mayor's statement on Wednesday, a series of coordinated assaults occurred in the Gao region of northern Mali, resulting in the death of at least 17 individuals and leaving several others injured. The attacks, carried out by the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), targeted the villages of Gaena and Boya. The first deputy mayor of Gabero, Hamido Mohamed Bello, relayed this information, explaining that armed members of ISGS launched an attack on Boya, using indiscriminate gunfire and claiming the lives of 14 people during the evening.
In Gaena, the second attack resulted in three fatalities, multiple injuries, and the abduction of up to six individuals. Bello also mentioned that this tragic incident appears to be connected to a conflict between ISGS and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated group. A member of JNIM, who had sustained injuries, had traveled to Boya but unfortunately passed away due to the severity of the wounds.
