A remote location in West Bengal near the Bangladesh border was the site of an incident involving Prasenjit Barman, a nursing student who recently graduated from Bangalore, Karnataka. Prasenjit had returned to his hometown to participate in the local "panchayat" elections taking place in West Bengal. Reports indicate that he had volunteered as a worker for the BJP party, which is the main opposition in the state and is often associated with anti-Muslim sentiments.
On Saturday afternoon, Prasenjit exercised his right to vote at the Santara Primary School-based election booth. At that time, an argument broke out between him and Sadek Alam, who was on duty at the booth, regarding voting and election matters. Prasenjit then went back home. However, according to reports, he was called from his home around 4 PM, taken back to the election venue, and assaulted. Two injections were allegedly administered to him. Upon hearing his screams, villagers rushed to his aid and transported him to Hemtabad Rural Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor.
Sanjit Barman, the deceased youth's brother, stated, "The civic volunteer called my brother from home and killed him. I demand that the perpetrator be punished."
His grieving wife, in tears, said, "They took my husband in front of me and beat him to death by injecting poison. He was killed because he voted for the BJP."
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sana Akhtar has commented that the cause of death is unclear, and they are awaiting the post-mortem report. The victim's family is concerned that the police may suppress information or manipulate the investigation.
