Aruna Miller: An Indian-born lady shining in the US

Aruna Miller, born on November 6, 1964, in Hyderabad, India, belonged to a Telugu Hindu family. At the age of seven, her family immigrated to the United States. Settling in Poughkeepsie, New York, her father, Rao Katragadda, worked as a mechanical engineer at IBM, and they were accompanied by Aruna's two siblings and mother. She attended public schools in Upstate New York and Ballwin, Missouri. Eventually, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Aruna Miller, a Democrat, currently holds the position of the tenth lieutenant governor of Maryland, having assumed office in 2023. Prior to this, she served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing Legislative District 15 in Montgomery County. In 2018, she pursued a congressional seat for Maryland's 6th district, but faced defeat in the Democratic primary, losing to David Trone by a margin of 9.3%, receiving 30.7% of the votes while Trone secured 40.0%.

In December 2021, Wes Moore selected Miller as his running mate for the Democratic primary in the 2022 Maryland gubernatorial election. After securing the Democratic nomination on July 19, 2022, they went on to triumph over Republican nominee Dan Cox and his running mate Gordana Schifanelli on November 8, 2022. Notably, Miller made history by becoming the first South Asian woman to be elected lieutenant governor in the United States.

She also holds the distinction of being the first Asian American lieutenant governor and the first immigrant to hold statewide office in Maryland. Additionally, she follows in the footsteps of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, becoming the second female lieutenant governor in Maryland's history.
